This is how we do it. :)

•Jeff Abercrombie• He is an artist, musician, worship leader, songwriter, surfer, father, husband... and a friend.
He recently recorded his new worship Ep. here in Redding, I had the honor being apart of the recording process and during recording process he asked me to shoot a vision he had for the album cover... He had an idea and wanted me to run with it and make something amazing... I had to capture his vision and somehow make the music visual... I told Jeff that if we were going to do this, it had to be done right. Its was going to take a lot of work and prep... a lot of creativity and even more energy. . . We sat on it for a few weeks and allowed the vision to grow. Then we had it. We knew exactly what we wanted to do... Now we had to figure out how we were going to do it. So with a limited budget and time, we needed to not cut any corners...
So... Off to the beach.
I drove over... Went to sleep.. Woke up on shoot day and had a little surf session to start the day off... we walked back to the car after surfing only to find a broken window and all of our wallets, phones and keys and clothes gone. :( Im not going to lie, I was pretty stressed... I was stuck in Eureka, Ca. 3hrs from home... with no keys for my car, no wallet/money and they even took my only pair of pants I brought over with me... So I was stuck cold and wet in a wetsuit. Bummer. . .
With all that happening in the morning I was determined not to let it ruin my trip or the shoot... With a few phone calls to my wife and a little help from my friends I had a spare key on its way over... Stress levels were coming down and we started getting ready for the shoot... We hiked out to this really beautiful beach and started setting up for the shoot... 1 generator, 9 lights, 5 hand made signs, 1 ladder and 1 hammer = a lot to set up.. Luckily for me we had some great help... We shot a few different setups... I even ended up using one of the test setup shots for the back cover. It was an amazing success and loads of fun to shoot! This is the kind of photography I get excited over... being creative and making something that sucks people into their own imagination... I love it! This is turned out to be one of my favorite shoots so far in my career... and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. :) Here are some phone shots from set up and the shoot...

so after a long night... here is how it turned out.. :)

Because it is so much more than music.

Lately there have been dreams and ideas floating around in my little head. As of right now I am a starving musician/photographer that is swimming in a bowl the size of a teaspoon... Yep. I feel like there is nowhere to go but flop out and die. Dont get me wrong, I really love my life, I have an amazing wife, amazing friends and I get to do things that others only dream of. I really do enjoy life. However, I am not living the dreams God has given me. Not by choice. No.. but by circumstance. How can I live a dream that God has given me when I live in a world that the world runs... I am called to be in this world but not of it... what the hell does that mean anyway? More and more I am seeing just how much of this world is controlled by the world. Even the Church. Seriously, when did this happen? Wait, no... HOW did this happen? Everywhere I look Christians are pulling the "God Card" or "Church Card" or "Christian Card" for the Jesus discount. . . Oh, you dont know about the Jesus Discount? Trust me... its only a matter of time before you find out... Its just like the friend discount. The one getting the discount feels great while the one discounting walks away feeling ripped off and bummed out. My problem is not the discounting, I do it all the time and feel great about it... I love blessing people with what I have. My problem I guess is when people assume that I am going to give them the discount... Word gets out and all of a sudden I owe the whole world something at a discounted price. or free. My problem is when we start paying people what we want to pay and all of a sudden that persons self worth goes down. Then the person giving the discount feels used...
So I titled this post "Because it is so much more than music" for this reason... See, I play in a band. yep, its true. and every time we have a new record, or merch item, or even play a show - There are a number of people that pull some sort of a card asking for free stuff or some special deal... I dont have a problem with giving away free stuff, and I do that all the time... But it makes me wonder if that said person really likes our music and understands how much really goes into putting together such good music. Because if they did then maybe they would pull out their wallet and pay for the art we are creating... because I am a starving artist. Really, I am not rich and YES it does take a LOT of time and money to produce such great art... So, no its not free and no you can not have a free t-shirt. do you go around giving away money to random people that walk into your store? I didn't think so.

This is my rant... It is for all of you who take artist for granted.. Because without us this world would be really boring and there are WAY too many of us who have put down their brushes and guitars and picked up a suit and tie. We are a starving and dying breed.

Please support the Artists whose art you love.
Thank You.
